A seasonal visitor arrives in force

Jellyfish are a natural part of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic coastal ecosystem. The creatures can gather in large concentrations when environmental conditions bring them together, and currents and winds can push those concentrations toward shore.

Scientists say jellyfish populations can be influenced by several factors, including water temperature, available food and ocean currents. The exact location and size of a swarm can change rapidly, meaning a beach with relatively clear water one day may have significant numbers of jellyfish the next.

Researchers at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center have described this year's jellyfish activity as part of a natural ecological cycle. The Chesapeake Bay nettle, one of the region's common species, also plays a role in the food web, including by feeding on comb jellies that can compete with oysters for food.

Why the stings can be so painful

Jellyfish use specialized cells called nematocysts on their tentacles to capture prey. When those cells come into contact with human skin, they can release venom, producing the familiar burning sensation and red or raised marks.

Most jellyfish stings are painful but not life-threatening. Symptoms can include redness, itching, tingling and localized pain, and they generally improve with time. However, more serious reactions can occur, particularly after extensive exposure or in people who have severe allergic reactions.

The danger does not necessarily disappear when a jellyfish washes onto the beach. Detached tentacles can continue to contain active stinging cells, which means beachgoers should avoid touching jellyfish with their bare hands.

Swarms can appear almost overnight

One of the most frustrating aspects of jellyfish blooms is their unpredictability.

Ocean currents and winds can concentrate jellyfish near shore or carry them away. That means conditions can vary substantially between beaches located only a short distance apart.

Warm water can also affect jellyfish development and reproduction. Scientists studying jellyfish populations in other coastal regions have found that temperature, currents and food availability can all influence when and where large concentrations appear.

The phenomenon is therefore not necessarily a sign that something has suddenly gone wrong in the ocean. Jellyfish blooms can be a recurring part of seasonal marine ecosystems.

People planning to swim should pay attention to lifeguard warnings and beach advisories before entering the water.

If jellyfish are present, swimmers can reduce their exposure by avoiding areas where large concentrations are visible. Wearing protective clothing can also provide an additional barrier between skin and tentacles.

Anyone who encounters a jellyfish on the beach should resist the temptation to pick it up, even if it appears dead.

What to do after a sting

People who are stung should get out of the water and seek assistance from a lifeguard when possible.

Medical guidance varies depending on the jellyfish species and local conditions. General first-aid recommendations include avoiding rubbing the affected skin and carefully removing any visible tentacles without touching them directly. Medical authorities advise getting local guidance because the appropriate treatment can differ among species.

Emergency medical attention is necessary if a sting causes serious symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, severe swelling, vomiting, fainting or other signs of a severe reaction.

An ecological role beyond the sting

Although jellyfish are often viewed primarily as a nuisance by swimmers, marine scientists emphasize that they are important members of ocean and estuary ecosystems.

They feed on small organisms and are themselves food for other marine animals. In Chesapeake Bay, the bay nettle is part of a complex food web and can influence populations of other gelatinous organisms.

That ecological role is one reason scientists caution against interpreting a jellyfish bloom simply as an environmental disaster.

A memorable end to beach season

For people spending the final days of summer along the Mid-Atlantic coast, however, the scientific explanation may offer little comfort when a jellyfish is floating nearby.

The combination of warm water, changing currents and large seasonal populations has created difficult conditions for swimmers in some areas.

As summer draws to a close, beachgoers may have to share the water with one of the ocean's oldest inhabitants — and keep a careful eye out for the tentacles that make an otherwise ordinary swim considerably more painful.
