August 28, 2026 — Millions of American vehicle owners are being warned to keep their cars outside because of fire risks, but the growing wave of recalls is not being driven primarily by electric vehicles.
Instead, the problem is increasingly tied to a broader transformation in the modern automobile: cars are packed with more electronics, computer-controlled systems and electrical components that can remain active even after a vehicle has been switched off.
Federal recall data show a sharp rise in vehicles subject to “park outside” warnings. CARFAX data indicate that more than 3.2 million vehicles nationwide currently have an outstanding recall involving a fire risk serious enough for owners to be advised not to park them inside garages.
The risk doesn't stop when the engine does
One reason the recalls are drawing attention is that some affected vehicles can catch fire while parked and turned off.
Modern cars contain networks of electronic control units, wiring harnesses, sensors, batteries and other components that continue to perform functions after the engine stops. A defect that causes overheating, an electrical short or another failure can therefore create a fire risk even when nobody is driving.
The Washington Post recently documented cases in which owners followed instructions to park their vehicles outside but later experienced fires anyway.
That makes these recalls particularly difficult for drivers. A conventional recall often means scheduling a repair appointment and temporarily changing how a vehicle is used. A “park outside” notice can instead force owners to change where they keep their cars every day.
Gas-powered vehicles make up much of the problem
The rise in fire-related recalls challenges the idea that vehicle fires are primarily an electric-vehicle issue.
Gasoline-powered vehicles account for a substantial portion of the cars involved in the current wave of recalls. Hybrids and EVs are also represented, but the underlying problems vary considerably from one vehicle to another.
Some recalls involve batteries, while others involve wiring, electrical modules, fuel-system components or other parts that can generate enough heat to ignite surrounding materials.
The issue is therefore less about one particular type of propulsion and more about the increasing complexity of vehicles.
Why cars are becoming more complicated
Today's vehicles are essentially computers on wheels.
A typical modern car can contain dozens of electronic control modules and miles of wiring. Systems responsible for braking, steering, infotainment, security, charging, climate control and driver assistance all rely on electronics.
That complexity brings major benefits, including improved safety and convenience. But it also creates more potential points of failure.
As automakers add increasingly sophisticated technology, even relatively small electrical defects can have consequences that were less common in older vehicles.
Industry observers have warned that “park outside” recalls could become more common as the amount of technology inside vehicles continues to grow.
A rapidly expanding recall category
The increase has been particularly noticeable this year.
Data reported from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that 17 “park outside” recall campaigns covering about 1.7 million vehicles were issued during the first seven months of 2026 alone.
When outstanding recalls from earlier campaigns are included, the number of affected vehicles rises to more than 3.2 million nationwide.
The figures demonstrate that the issue is not limited to one automaker or one vehicle technology.
Fire risks can be difficult to identify
For consumers, another challenge is that defects capable of causing fires may not produce obvious warning signs.
A driver may not notice a problem until an electrical component overheats or a short circuit causes ignition. In some cases, the vehicle can be parked for hours before a fire starts.
That is why federal safety officials and automakers sometimes issue particularly strong instructions when a defect is associated with a potential fire.
A “park outside” warning is effectively an indication that the consequences of a failure could extend beyond damage to the vehicle itself. A car parked inside an attached garage can potentially expose a home and nearby vehicles to fire.
EVs are part of the picture — but not the whole story
Electric vehicles have faced high-profile battery-fire recalls in recent years, which has helped reinforce public concern about the safety of large lithium-ion batteries.
Battery fires can be difficult to extinguish and, in some circumstances, can reignite after appearing to be contained.
But treating the current recall wave as an EV phenomenon misses the larger trend.
The vehicles being recalled span gasoline, hybrid and electric powertrains. The common thread is increasingly sophisticated electrical architecture and the possibility that components can overheat or fail even when a vehicle is not operating normally.
Recent recall activity in China also demonstrates that EV safety remains an important issue globally. China has launched a year-long vehicle-quality campaign following a major recall involving millions of electric vehicles and several manufacturers.
What drivers should do
For vehicle owners, the most important step is to check for open recalls rather than assuming a car is safe because it has never experienced a problem.
Drivers who receive a notice instructing them to park outside should follow the manufacturer's guidance until the defect has been repaired.
Owners should also pay attention to warning signs such as unusual smells, smoke, electrical malfunctions or unexpected heat and should never ignore a recall involving a potential fire hazard.
A changing safety challenge
The latest recalls illustrate how vehicle safety is evolving alongside automotive technology.
The industry has made cars safer in many ways, but adding more electronics and automated systems also creates new failure modes. The growing number of “park outside” recalls suggests that regulators and manufacturers will need to pay increasing attention to risks that can occur after a vehicle has been switched off.
For consumers, the lesson is broader than whether a vehicle runs on gasoline, electricity or a combination of both.
The biggest fire risk may increasingly come not from the type of engine under the hood, but from the complex electronic systems that keep modern cars operating even after the engine stops.
