Incoming Mayor Builds Team Ahead of November Victory
WASHINGTON — August 30, 2026 — Janeese Lewis George is preparing for the possibility of taking over as Washington’s next mayor, laying the groundwork for an administration that could bring a sharp change in the city’s political direction.
Lewis George, a D.C. Council member representing Ward 4, won the Democratic mayoral primary in June. Because Washington is overwhelmingly Democratic, her primary victory put her in a strong position to succeed Mayor Muriel E. Bowser, who decided not to seek a fourth term.
The incoming mayor is expected to focus heavily on affordability, government performance and the District’s relationship with the federal government. Her campaign has emphasized expanding access to housing and child care while improving basic city services.

One of the biggest challenges facing a Lewis George administration could be its relationship with President Donald Trump.
Trump has repeatedly criticized Lewis George and has threatened greater federal intervention in Washington if she becomes mayor. The District is already dealing with an unusually strong federal presence, including the continuing deployment of National Guard troops.
Lewis George has said she is willing to work with the Trump administration when cooperation benefits Washington residents, while also promising to oppose federal actions that threaten the District’s autonomy.
Her campaign has increasingly emphasized the need to defend local control while maintaining relationships with federal officials and members of Congress.
Focus on Housing and Child Care
Affordability is expected to be one of the defining issues of the new administration.
Lewis George has campaigned on making housing more accessible and expanding affordable child care across the District. Her campaign says Washington is too expensive for many families and that city government needs to take a more aggressive role in addressing those costs.
