Unexplained Fatigue May Signal a Heart Attack in Women Today

Fatigue is something many people routinely blame on stress, poor sleep or a busy schedule. But for women, a significant and unexplained drop in energy can sometimes be an important warning sign of a heart attack.

Experts say women may experience symptoms that are less recognizable than the classic image of sudden, crushing chest pain. Recent reporting has highlighted fatigue as one of the most common warning symptoms women may experience in the days or even weeks before a heart attack.

That makes an unusual change in energy levels something women should not automatically dismiss, particularly when there is no obvious explanation.

When Fatigue Becomes a Warning Sign

Everyone experiences tiredness. A demanding workweek, inadequate sleep or strenuous exercise can naturally leave someone exhausted.

The concern is different when a person experiences a substantial decline from her normal energy level without an obvious reason.

Cardiologist Arash Bereliani told The Washington Post that a significant, unexplained decrease in energy compared with a person's normal baseline deserves attention. Research cited in the report indicates that fatigue can occur in a large proportion of women experiencing heart attacks.

The symptom can be particularly easy to overlook because it may develop gradually rather than appearing as an obvious medical emergency.

Women May Experience Different Symptoms

The traditional picture of a heart attack often involves severe chest pressure and pain spreading down the left arm. While chest discomfort remains the most common symptom for both women and men, women are more likely to experience additional symptoms that may be mistaken for another condition.

The U.S. Office on Women's Health lists extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, indigestion and pain in the back, neck, jaw or throat among symptoms that can occur in women.

Some women may also experience a heart attack without the dramatic symptoms people commonly associate with one.

That can make recognizing changes in the body especially important.

Why Fatigue Can Be Misleading

Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms people experience for countless reasons. Stress, infections, sleep problems, hormonal changes and demanding schedules can all affect energy levels.

Because of that, someone experiencing unusual tiredness may be tempted to wait for it to disappear.

But experts emphasize the importance of paying attention to a noticeable change from normal, especially when fatigue occurs alongside other symptoms.

Shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, sweating or discomfort in the chest, back, jaw, neck or arms can make the situation more concerning.

Chest Pain Isn't Always the Whole Story

Women should not assume that the absence of severe chest pain means their heart is not in danger.

According to the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women initiative, women can experience unusual tiredness and weakness along with more familiar heart attack symptoms. The organization advises people to seek emergency medical attention when heart attack symptoms occur.

A heart attack happens when blood flow supplying the heart muscle becomes severely reduced or blocked. The longer the heart remains without adequate oxygen, the greater the potential damage.

That is why recognizing symptoms early can be critical.

What Women Should Do

An unexplained change in energy does not automatically mean a heart attack is occurring. Fatigue alone has many possible causes.

However, sudden or unusual symptoms should not be ignored, particularly when they occur with breathing difficulties, chest discomfort, pain elsewhere in the upper body, nausea, sweating or lightheadedness.

If someone believes she may be experiencing a heart attack, health authorities advise calling emergency services immediately rather than waiting to see whether the symptoms disappear.

Women can also discuss their personal heart-disease risk with a health professional and learn which symptoms may be particularly important for them.

The key message is simple: being unusually tired is often harmless, but a major unexplained change in energy should not automatically be written off as everyday exhaustion. For some women, it may be an early clue that something more serious is happening.
