Trump Backs Crypto Bill as Industry Push Gains Momentum

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has joined leading cryptocurrency executives in a renewed effort to persuade Congress to pass legislation establishing a federal regulatory framework for digital assets, putting the White House behind a bill that has become a major priority for the crypto industry.

At a White House meeting on Wednesday, Trump urged lawmakers to move forward with the CLARITY Act, legislation designed to establish clearer rules for the rapidly expanding digital-asset sector. The bill would help determine how different cryptocurrencies are classified and which federal regulators should oversee them.

Trump's intervention comes as the legislation faces uncertainty in the Senate. The president and crypto executives are seeking to build enough political support to overcome disagreements that have slowed the bill's progress.

Trump calls for action on crypto rules

Trump has repeatedly portrayed cryptocurrency as an important part of America's economic and technological future. At the White House gathering, he argued that the United States needs clear rules to remain competitive in digital assets and avoid falling behind other countries, particularly China.

The CLARITY Act is intended to provide a clearer division of authority between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). One of the central issues is determining whether a particular digital asset should be treated as a security or a commodity.

Supporters say clearer regulations could encourage companies to invest, hire workers and develop blockchain technology in the United States rather than moving operations overseas.

Crypto executives rally behind the legislation

Trump's meeting brought together prominent figures from the cryptocurrency and financial industries. Executives from major companies, including Coinbase, Robinhood, Ripple and Kraken, have backed efforts to establish a comprehensive federal framework for digital assets.

The industry's argument is that years of regulatory uncertainty have made it difficult for companies to determine which rules apply to their businesses. A federal market-structure law could replace parts of the existing patchwork approach with clearer responsibilities for regulators.

The renewed White House push also sent a positive signal to financial markets. Cryptocurrency-related stocks rose sharply after Trump's comments, while Bitcoin and other major digital assets also gained. Reuters reported that Bitcoin climbed about 3.8 percent and moved above $70,000 following the administration's renewed support for the legislation.

Senate opposition remains a major obstacle

Despite support from the White House and the crypto industry, the CLARITY Act still faces significant political challenges.

Democratic lawmakers have raised concerns about the legislation as well as Trump's extensive financial involvement in cryptocurrency. Financial disclosures show that Trump earned more than $1.4 billion from crypto-related activities in 2025, intensifying questions about whether his administration's crypto policies could benefit his personal business interests.

Those concerns have become an important part of the debate surrounding the bill. Critics argue that lawmakers should establish stronger safeguards against conflicts of interest before approving legislation that could significantly affect the value and growth of the digital-asset industry.

The White House and supporters of the legislation, meanwhile, have emphasized the broader economic argument: creating predictable rules could strengthen the American crypto industry and encourage innovation.

A broader shift in U.S. crypto policy

Trump's latest intervention is part of a broader transformation in U.S. cryptocurrency policy.

His administration has sought to position the United States as a global center for digital assets, reversing the more restrictive regulatory approach associated with the previous administration. In 2025, Trump signed the GENIUS Act, the first major federal cryptocurrency legislation, establishing a national framework for stablecoins. The White House said the law was intended to protect consumers while strengthening the role of the U.S. dollar and America's position in digital finance.

The CLARITY Act would go beyond stablecoins by addressing the wider structure of the digital-asset market.

Why the bill matters to the crypto industry

For cryptocurrency companies, the biggest issue is regulatory certainty.

Businesses have long argued that unclear distinctions between securities, commodities and other digital assets create legal risks. Companies may face different regulatory expectations depending on how their products are structured and which federal agency claims jurisdiction.

A comprehensive market-structure law could provide companies with clearer guidelines for launching products, operating exchanges and dealing with customers.

Supporters also believe a clearer framework could make traditional financial institutions more comfortable participating in the digital-asset market.

Trump's crypto ties add political pressure

The president's personal financial relationship with cryptocurrency has made the debate unusually politically sensitive.

Trump has become closely associated with the digital-asset industry through cryptocurrency ventures and other businesses connected to his family. The Washington Post reported that his crypto-related income reached more than $1.4 billion in 2025.

That financial connection gives opponents an additional argument against rushing the legislation. They contend that any new regulatory framework should include strong protections to prevent government policy from being influenced by private financial interests.

Supporters counter that the need for national crypto rules exists independently of Trump's personal holdings and that the United States needs legislation to provide certainty for an industry that has already become a significant part of global finance.

What happens next

The immediate challenge is convincing enough senators to support the CLARITY Act. Trump's public endorsement gives the bill greater visibility and puts additional pressure on lawmakers, but it does not guarantee passage.

The Senate must still resolve disagreements over regulatory authority, consumer protections and ethics concerns surrounding the president's crypto interests.

For the cryptocurrency industry, however, the White House meeting represents an important development. Trump has made clear that passing a broader digital-asset framework is a priority, while major crypto companies are actively pushing lawmakers to complete the legislation.

The coming Senate debate will determine whether that alliance between the White House and the crypto industry can translate political momentum into a new federal rule book for digital assets.
