New York — American Regent Animal Health has issued a nationwide recall of select lots of its Adequan injections for dogs and horses after routine quality testing detected visible glass fiber material inside some vials. The company said the recall is being carried out as a precaution to protect animal health, and no injuries linked to the affected products have been reported.
The recall covers two lots of Adequan Canine Injection, used to treat noninfectious degenerative or traumatic joint disease in dogs, and two lots of Adequan i.m. Injection, prescribed for horses experiencing joint dysfunction and lameness. Both medications are administered by intramuscular injection under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.
According to the company, the glass fibers were discovered during testing of retained product samples. Officials warned that injecting medication containing particulate matter could cause localized pain, swelling, inflammation, irritation, infection, or abscesses at the injection site. Despite the potential risks, American Regent said it has not received any reports of adverse events associated with the recalled lots.
Pet owners and horse owners who possess the affected products are advised to stop using them immediately and consult their veterinarian if an animal experiences symptoms that may be related to the medication. Veterinary hospitals, distributors, retailers, and pharmacies have also been instructed to discontinue distribution and either return the recalled products to the manufacturer or dispose of them according to the company's guidance.
The recalled products were distributed across the United States through veterinary practices, wholesalers, distributors, and online pharmacies over multiple shipment dates beginning in 2024. The recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which published the manufacturer's recall notice on its website.
American Regent said it is working with customers to facilitate product returns and replacements where appropriate. The company emphasized that the action reflects its commitment to product safety and encouraged veterinarians and consumers to report any suspected adverse reactions or product quality concerns to the manufacturer or the FDA.
