Millions of vehicle owners across the United States are facing an unusual and potentially dangerous safety problem: some recalled cars can catch fire even when they are parked, switched off and not being charged.
An estimated 3.2 million vehicles currently have outstanding “park outside” recalls, according to vehicle-history provider Carfax. The warnings are issued when a defect creates a risk that a vehicle could unexpectedly ignite, particularly when it is parked inside a garage or close to a building.
The growing number of these recalls is raising concerns among safety experts because a vehicle fire that starts while nobody is nearby can quickly spread to a home, apartment building or other structure.
A Different Kind of Vehicle Safety Threat
Traditional automotive recalls often involve problems that become dangerous while a vehicle is being driven — defective brakes, steering problems, airbags or other components that can cause crashes.
“Park outside” recalls are different.
In these cases, the danger can remain even after the driver has turned the vehicle off and walked away. Electrical systems and other components can remain energized, allowing a fault to develop hours after a vehicle has been parked.
Experts refer to some of these incidents as “key-off fires.” Modern vehicles contain significantly more electronic components than older cars, increasing the number of electrical systems that can potentially malfunction.
Vehicles also increasingly contain high-voltage batteries, particularly plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles. Battery-related defects can create another pathway to a serious fire.
Jeep Recall Highlights the Risk
One recent example involved certain Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids.
Sarah Lammersen learned that her 2022 Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrid had been recalled because its high-voltage battery could potentially catch fire even when the vehicle was parked. The recall covered more than 320,000 Jeep Wranglers and Grand Cherokees.
Owners were advised to park the vehicles outdoors and away from structures and were told not to charge them until the recall repair was completed.
Lammersen's vehicle subsequently caught fire and was destroyed, according to a lawsuit cited by The Washington Post. Nobody was injured in that incident.
The case illustrates the difficult position owners can find themselves in after receiving a fire-related recall: following the manufacturer's instructions may reduce the risk, but it does not necessarily eliminate the danger while they wait for a permanent repair.
2026 Has Already Seen a Major Increase
The problem appears to be expanding.
According to the Washington Post's analysis, 17 “park outside” recall campaigns covering approximately 1.7 million vehicles were announced during the first seven months of 2026. That puts the year among the busiest since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began using the “park outside” designation more than a decade ago.
Eight such campaigns were announced during June and July alone.
NHTSA introduced the designation in 2015 because vehicle fires occurring inside buildings can have particularly severe consequences. In 2022, the agency added a prominent “park outside” warning box to its online recall listings to draw greater attention to the risk.
Why Are Parked Vehicles Catching Fire?
There is no single cause behind all of these recalls.
Potential problems can involve electrical wiring, batteries, starter systems, power-steering components, seat motors and other equipment. Some systems continue to receive electrical power even after the engine and ignition have been switched off.
Modern vehicles also contain far more electronics and tightly packed components than earlier generations.
That complexity can create additional failure points. If an electrical fault generates enough heat near combustible materials, a fire can begin without the vehicle being driven.
The risk is not limited exclusively to electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids. Conventional gasoline-powered vehicles can also receive “park outside” warnings when electrical or mechanical defects create a fire hazard.
The Parking Problem for Drivers
The recall warning creates an especially difficult problem for people who live in apartments, condominiums or densely populated cities.
A driver may be instructed to keep a recalled vehicle away from buildings, but may not have a private driveway or safe outdoor parking location.
For some owners, parking outside can also expose the vehicle to theft or other risks.
The Washington Post reported that some Hyundai owners have faced this exact dilemma because certain vehicles have been affected by fire-related recalls while also being associated with well-publicized theft vulnerabilities.
This leaves some consumers choosing between two undesirable risks: protecting their home from a possible vehicle fire or leaving the vehicle somewhere that could make it more vulnerable to theft.
Repairs Can Take Time
Another concern is the delay between a recall announcement and the availability of a permanent fix.
Automakers may need time to identify the precise cause, develop a repair, manufacture replacement components and distribute them through dealerships.
During that period, owners may continue receiving instructions to park outdoors.
For drivers who have access to a large driveway, that may be inconvenient. For people who rely on underground garages or shared parking structures, it can be much more complicated.
Safety advocates say manufacturers and regulators need to ensure that recall remedies reach consumers quickly, particularly when the potential consequence is a vehicle fire.
What Vehicle Owners Should Do
Drivers who receive a fire-related recall should not ignore the warning.
Owners should check the recall information for their specific vehicle and follow the manufacturer's instructions and any guidance from NHTSA. If the notice says to park outside, owners should avoid parking the vehicle inside a garage or directly next to a home or other structure until the recall remedy has been completed.
They should also check whether the manufacturer has announced that replacement parts or repairs are available.
A recall does not mean every affected vehicle will catch fire. Rather, it means the manufacturer or safety authorities have identified a defect that creates a safety risk significant enough to require corrective action.
A Growing Challenge for Modern Cars
The rise in “park outside” recalls highlights a broader change in automotive safety.
Cars have become more technologically sophisticated, with increasingly complex electrical networks, computerized systems and high-voltage batteries. Those technologies bring major benefits, but they also introduce new types of failure that can remain hazardous even when a vehicle is sitting unused.
For millions of drivers, the most unsettling part of the current recall surge is that the danger may not occur on the road.
A vehicle can be sitting quietly in a driveway or parking lot, with the engine turned off, and still potentially become a fire hazard.
With about 3.2 million vehicles currently subject to outstanding “park outside” recalls, the issue has become more than an isolated automotive defect. It is now a significant consumer-safety challenge for automakers, regulators and vehicle owners alike.
